Who is this childcare course designed for?

This childcare course is designed for those who are interested in working with children from birth to 8 years of age in a professional capacity. It is suitable for people who want to move on to Higher Education or seek employment. This course qualifies you to work in unsupervised job roles and is internationally recognised. 

What will this course lead to?

If you complete a Level 3 qualification successfully you could achieve up to the equivalent to 3 A 'levels which will enable you to progress to Higher Education.  Alternatively, you could seek employment in schools, nurseries, day nurseries, playgroups and other related fields. Most of our students who complete this qualification progress on to Higher Education to pursue a Degree in Primary Teaching, Educational Studies, Social Work, Children’s Nursing, Midwifery or Education Psychology. Alternatively, you may embark on a Foundation Degree or a Higher National Diploma in any related field such as Health and Social Care, Early Years or  Working Children and Young People, (this route will provide you with an opportunity to work while you study for a degree). 

Course content and assessment

Pathway 1- Pearson btec tECHNICAL OCCUPATIONAL ENTRY FOR EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONERS (DIPLOMA)

This qualification is for learners who want to start a career in early years education and care.  It will give you the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge, technical and practical skills, and to apply these skills in work-related environments.

The course comprises of 11 units which includes child development, Legislation, policies and procedures, caring for children and supporting children’s learning through play, amongst others.

Mandatory Work Experience

Students are expected to complete 300 hours of practical work in childcare settings over the course of the year.

Assessment

This qualification is 100% internally assessed.  The course will allow students to progress directly to employment in the early years sector or on to an early years apprenticeship. The qualification also provides progression to Level 3 qualifications. 

Pathway 2- T Level Technical Qualification in Education and Early Years - 2 Years

T Level - Education & Early Years 

EDUCATION & EARLY YEARS - ASSISTING TEACHING 

If you've always dreamed of working in education, and inspiring people to achieve their full potential, this T Level could be your next step towards your dream career. 

The T Level in Education and Early Years is a two-year programme, equivalent to 3 A levels. 

Throughout this T Level, you will learn through classroom-based activities, as well as taking part in trips, visits, industry talks and taster events. In addition, teaching provides opportunities to develop skills through a range of active and academic learning methods. 

The T Level focuses on developing the skills that prepare you for professional practice and progression into employment within early years care and education or assisting teaching with young children. 

YEAR 1 CONTENT 

Classroom Based Learning: 

  • Element 1: Wider Education Sector 

  • Element 2: Supporting Education 

  • Element 3: Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and well-being 

  • Element 4: SEND 

  • Element 5: Child Development 

  • Element 6: Working in Partnership 

  • Element 7: Professional Practice 

Work Placement: 

  • 2 full days at primary school 

YEAR 2 CONTENT 

Classroom Based Learning: 

  • Performance Outcome 1 = Support the class teacher to enhance children’s education, individually and in groups 

  • Performance Outcome 2 = Plan, provide and review educational opportunities in collaboration with teachers and other adults 

  • Performance Outcome 3 = Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people 

  • Performance Outcome 4 = Recognise, adapt and respond to individual children’s needs, including those with special educational needs and disability to support development and access to the curriculum 

Work Placement: 

  • 2 full days at work placement setting- Primary School 

HOW AM I ASSESSED 

In Year 1, you will complete 1 core exam 

You will also have an Employer Set Project (ESP) - The purpose of this is to ensure you can apply core knowledge and skills learnt to develop a substantial piece of work in response to an employer-set brief. As part of the ESP, you must demonstrate 4 core skills… 

  1. Communicate information clearly to engage children and young people 

  2. Work with others to plan and provide activities 

  3. Use formative and summative assessments to monitor progress of children 

  4. How to assess and manage risk to your own and others safety 

Exam- 2 hours 30 minutes 60% 

Employer set project (ESP) 15 hours 45 minutes = 40% weighting 

Subtotal = 100% 

These will all be graded A* to E and U. 

In Year 2, you will carry out 3 assignments… 

Assignment 1: 2 hours 30 minutes – weighting 50% - controlled in classroom 

Assignment 2: 4 hours 30 minutes – weighting 25% - 3 structured observations observed on placement 

Assignment 3: 4 hours – weighting 25% - controlled in classroom 

Subtotal = 100% 

These assignments will be graded Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*
