Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Cressex we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which challenges and is appropriate to all students’ abilities, strengths and interests.

We recognise, however, that sometimes students need to be given additional support at school for a limited period of time to help them overcome a particular, transitory difficulty. Other students need continuous support throughout their whole time at school.

Whatever their child’s level of need, parents/carers can be reassured that staff at Cressex Community School will do all they can to support him or her to learn and achieve well.

We have a well-staffed Learning Support Department with a large team of very knowledgeable teaching assistants. The team is headed up by a full-time Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), who is fully conversant with the latest SEN developments and the current SEN Code of Practice.

As soon as we are made aware that a child with Special Educational Needs or a Disability is joining us we ensure that we liaise closely with his/her existing school in order to make the transition to Cressex as smooth as possible. In the case of children joining at the start of Year 7, the SENDCo visits students in their primary school and organises opportunities for students and their parents/carers to visit Cressex to aid with familiarisation and allay any concerns before the child starts here in September.

There is also a named governor who takes a special interest in all matters concerning the school’s SEN provision.

Please take time to read the Cressex Community School Special Educational Needs Policy and the Cressex Community School Accessibility Plan and use the links below to find out more.  If you would like to discuss the contents of the policy or any other matters regarding Cressex Community School’s SEND provision, please contact Mrs Sharon Weightman, SENDCo, on 01494 437729.
