Future NHS Stars: Year 9 and 10 Get Inspiring Insight into Healthcare Roles

Year 9 and Year 10 students recently enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to work alongside professionals from the NHS as part of their Health and Social Care curriculum. Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust joined forces with Buckinghamshire New University to create interactive sessions that gave students a valuable insight into a variety of healthcare careers and the essential roles they play in supporting patients.

Students explored three roles in engaging practical sessions: Physiotherapy, Operating Department Practice (ODP), and Occupational Therapy, allowing students to learn directly from experienced practitioners and gain hands-on experience of the skills used in healthcare settings every day. They also learned how they can go on to train in these vocational careers at university.

During the Physiotherapy session, students discovered how physiotherapists help people recover from injuries, improve movement, and manage long-term conditions. They tested their own balance and learned about the importance of rehabilitation and patient care.

The Operating Department Practice workshop introduced students to the vital role ODPs play in supporting patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. Students learned CPR and gained a fascinating insight into the operating theatre environment and the teamwork required to ensure procedures run smoothly and safely.

Students also learned about Occupational Therapy and how occupational therapists help individuals develop, recover, and maintain the skills needed for everyday life. Through a range of activities, students explored how therapists support people to achieve greater independence and improve their quality of life.

A particular highlight for many was the CPR training session. Students were taught lifesaving techniques and practised the skills needed to respond confidently in an emergency situation. This important experience not only enhanced their understanding of first aid but also equipped them with knowledge that could one day help save a life.

The sessions were both informative and inspiring, giving students a greater understanding of the wide range of rewarding careers available within the NHS. We would like to thank our local NHS and university partners for their time, expertise, and enthusiasm in providing such engaging learning experiences for our students.

This valuable collaboration has helped bring the Health and Social Care curriculum to life and has inspired many students to consider future careers in healthcare.
