The Year 10 Health and Social Care class had the opportunity to go on a trip to Aylesbury college to visit the Health Tec department. The Health Tec department is a training hub for health and social care students and professionals. The students had an immersive hospital-like experience where they were able to practice dealing with and understanding symptoms of different medical situations with high technology mannequins.
The students worked in small groups, assessing multiple “patients” who had different medical issues that the students had to recognize and monitor. The patients ranged from those with jaundice to patients with stomas. The patients’ heart rate as well as oxygen levels had to be monitored every minute, with screens labelling the patients’ statistics. The students were given charts to help them to diagnose and identify the symptoms that the patients were experiencing.
The Year 10 students really enjoyed the trip as well as being able to experience health and social care services as a real- life setting, helping them to understand the role of healthcare professionals. The workshop provided an insight into the future opportunities that could be available to the students who are studying health and social care.
