Cressex wins Secondary School of the Year Award at Bucks and MK Sports Awards evening

On Friday 1st December three members of the PE department, Miss Fraser, Mr Gorley and myself attended the Bucks and MK Sports Awards, organised by LEAP.

The Awards evening recognises and thanks those individuals and organisations who work hard to help make sport happen and in turn contribute to improving the lives of local people.

LEAP organised a fantastic evening at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury, with students from local schools performing cheerleading routines and playing in a swing band. Olympians Derek Redmond and Greg Rutherford MBE were guest speakers, sharing their passion for sport, describing the highs and lows of their Olympic journeys, and sharing anecdotes of how they had succeeded in their sporting disciplines.

With over 300 in attendance, it was a privilege to be among so many who are so dedicated to sport. Being in a shortlist of three for the Secondary School of the Year Award (out of 19 schools in Bucks and Milton Keynes) was a high point in itself.  As the announcement neared we sat in anticipation alongside members of the PE teams from Great Marlow School and Buckingham School.

'The winners of Secondary School of the Year Award are ........ Cressex Community School!'

Huge smiles spread across our faces as we took in the news and rose to our feet. A long walk to the stage to receive the prestigious award with applause all around brought a tingle of excitement. Photographs and interviews ensued. The whole experience is now all a bit of a blur, but it was a fantastic evening which stirred many different positive emotions.

We were delighted to receive the accolade ahead of such strong nominees and truly believe it shows how far we have come as a PE department and school, with students at the heart of everything we do.

On the back of this success, I was asked attend a radio interview at Wycombe Sound FM to talk about our success as a PE department winning this prestigious award. Lots of questions were asked on what we do as a department and how we use breadth and a diverse range of sports to engage and challenge our students.

If you would like to listen to the interview, click on the link below and scroll on to 29.35 into the broadcast. It is a 30 minute interview, so you may need a coffee to see you through!
